Now that she had finished her free degree, it was time to move into phase II of Henny's lifetime plan - make some money!! Lets ignore the fact that she gotten everything free up to this point and never had to work for anything. For Henny, there were two ways to get more money. One was to find a job, which was the more common method. The second way, and more preferable, was to attach herself to a man who was already making lots of money.
Sherman Pong was by no means a wealthy man. His line of work in Engineering however, meant that he could potentially earn a lot of money in the future. And so Henny had to be a bit more patient before she could reap the benefits.
So why Sherman Pong, you ask? Surely there are wealthier men out there that Henny could latch onto. She was physically good looking so she could attract a lot of men. The answer to this requires some explanation. You see, in this day and age, many young wealthy men have a better selection of women to choose from. While Henny was attractive, she was by no means drop dead gorgeous. There were plenty of other Asian women who were sexier and had nicer features. In addition to this, Henny had a rather abrasive personality. Spending too much time with her would only highlight her pretentiousness, selfish personal ambitions and lack of intelligence. In fact, it is for this very reason that Henny never had any friends (particularly girlfriends). She was blunt to the point of being rude, had an inappropriate sense of humour, lacked any social etiquette and worst of all, was flirtatiously friendly with other people's boyfriends and husbands. And so while Sherman Pong was not wealthy through birth, he was at least tolerant of her many shortcomings.
The other reason why Sherman was a good choice was because he was already a citizen of New Zealand. Henny had always held the intention of moving permanently from China but she had neither the skills nor the money. Sherman was in fact, the easiest most sure way of obtaining permanent residence. If she could somehow prove that she loved this man and was willing to spend the rest of her life with him, she would not only have permanent residence in New Zealand but also potentially not have to work for the rest of her life. The latter was by far, the most important.
And so Henny decided to put her plans on hold temporarily while Sherman worked his way to the top, eventhough this meant she had to do the one thing her mother had taught her never to do - get a job.

Henny Peng: Chapter One
Henny Peng's story began in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai, where she was born to a working class family. Money must have been tight and sadly, Hen's mother was unable to work due to a minor physical disability. And so Hen was brought up by her stay-at-home mother with a very unique view on life and an equally unique set of values.
From childhood, Hen was brought up to value money and wealth above all else. Perhaps one can't blame her completely, because her materialism had been voraciously instilled in her since the day she was born.
When she turned 18, Hen met a boy named Lucky (or well maybe a string of boys but this one stood out over the rest because of his wealthy background). It is hard to say if Hen was in love with him, but in any case she decided to follow him halfway across the world to the beautiful land of New Zealand. Lucky had been accepted into a local university and Hen took this opportunity to request financial aid from his parents. Thats right, the aid was provided not by Hen's parents but by Lucky's parents.
And so Hen and Lucky travelled to New Zealand so that they could both attend university and hopefully start a life together. During this time they also decided to apply for permanent residence because apparently thats what you do when you travel to a non-Asian/African country.
Alas, things went downhill from here because Lucky took up gambling as a hobby and swindled half his wealth away. Hen was not impressed with this addiction for several reasons. First of all, she was no longer getting the lifestyle she required. Secondly, his obsession with gambling meant that she was no longer the most important thing in his world. And lastly, Lucky was losing too much of the money she was hoping to inherit. Henny decided that something needed to be done, so she asked his parents to intervene.
However it was never meant to be and when her studies were complete, Hen decided to dump Lucky. He was still gambling and his parents were too worried about him to notice that she had taken off with a great portion of their hard earned money.By this time, she had successfully obtained a degree, completely free. It was during this time, that Henny met a new man - Sherman Pong. Things were indeed looking up for Henny.
