Henny Peng's story began in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai, where she was born to a working class family. Money must have been tight and sadly, Hen's mother was unable to work due to a minor physical disability. And so Hen was brought up by her stay-at-home mother with a very unique view on life and an equally unique set of values.
From childhood, Hen was brought up to value money and wealth above all else. Perhaps one can't blame her completely, because her materialism had been voraciously instilled in her since the day she was born.
When she turned 18, Hen met a boy named Lucky (or well maybe a string of boys but this one stood out over the rest because of his wealthy background). It is hard to say if Hen was in love with him, but in any case she decided to follow him halfway across the world to the beautiful land of New Zealand. Lucky had been accepted into a local university and Hen took this opportunity to request financial aid from his parents. Thats right, the aid was provided not by Hen's parents but by Lucky's parents.
And so Hen and Lucky travelled to New Zealand so that they could both attend university and hopefully start a life together. During this time they also decided to apply for permanent residence because apparently thats what you do when you travel to a non-Asian/African country.
Alas, things went downhill from here because Lucky took up gambling as a hobby and swindled half his wealth away. Hen was not impressed with this addiction for several reasons. First of all, she was no longer getting the lifestyle she required. Secondly, his obsession with gambling meant that she was no longer the most important thing in his world. And lastly, Lucky was losing too much of the money she was hoping to inherit. Henny decided that something needed to be done, so she asked his parents to intervene.
However it was never meant to be and when her studies were complete, Hen decided to dump Lucky. He was still gambling and his parents were too worried about him to notice that she had taken off with a great portion of their hard earned money.By this time, she had successfully obtained a degree, completely free. It was during this time, that Henny met a new man - Sherman Pong. Things were indeed looking up for Henny.
Looking forward to chapter 2.
